Mottled Wing Bark Louse
Size 7mm. Found on bark of a tree covered in lichen. CSIRO calls it Myopsocus australis (see http://www.ento.csiro.au/education/insects/psocoptera.html). It is indeed a very large Psocid, very distinctive, although hard to see. I only noticed it while photo hunting a small gnat nearby. The animal seemed to be feeding on the lichen. It looks just dark, but under magnification yellow dots and lines all over the body start to show. It has the typical snouted head with long antennae, protruding composite eyes. Wings display nicely, covering the body like a coat. Wing venation is yellow dotted and divides the wings into different segments. I could not find a representation on http://www.brisbaneinsects.org.au which usually means that the animal does not exist or the page is not linked yet. I think it must be a very common animal. So, I am glad to add this one to this under-represented and seemingly neglected insect order. Update 30/8/2017: Found in our garden hiding in a knuckle of our wire mesh fence. Such a beauty! Update 5/10/2017 Found two individuals in close proximity to each other ( about three meters). The one photographed was very large, closer to 9mm. I observed and documented how it either lay eggs or how it defacated on our colourbond fence.
