Drill-mouth Click Beetle
Size 8mm. This small beetle was found on our spotted gum slats that we prepared to be installed on our fence. The animal did not move when I found it. I tried hard to find its eyes and locate its mouth and head. It is brown all over. It stuck both its antennae out in a 90 degree angle. The thorax and abdomen are joined similar to click beetles. Fearing it might be a wood borer of the Bostrichoidea group, I now think that it might be an Elaterid Beetle. Its eyes are multifacetted but only very roughly compartementalised. Antennae show sharp triangular segments and a wider base. Thorax is pointed uniformly, abdomen in a lateral pattern. Legs are relatively fine.
