Pie Dish Beetle
Size 15mm. This beetle was found inside. We saw something flying, but it was gone when we checked. Later, this black animal crawled on the floor. It was slow, tried to avoid the camera but did not fly away. I matched the beetle towards https://www.researchgate.net/publication/274378920_Further_observations_on_the_tribe_Ancyronini_Kolibac_2006_Coleoptera_Trogossitidae_Peltinae Maybe it belongs into a different category that I could not find late at night and in a rush. Ancyrona gabonica is supposed to be an African species. I will keep being on the lookout for a proper ID. Update 12/4/2017: Found a very good match on ALA, namely Helea waitei. I am hesitant to adapt this identification, since the type specimen also displayed is definitely a different species or a completely different morph of the same species. Surely, Australian science is working hard to update their zoological databases with the help of molecular analysis. Say loud: D - N - A, not photo, not 'believe the expert' or anyone in charge, not nice field survey lists or data grabs. I am still struggling to see if the specimen fits in the Heleina genus. It is so tempting to call this animal Pie Dish Beetle. Only found yesterday, I might keep looking for a suitable taxonomic home for this guy. Update: definitely not Helea waitei, but I am also quite sure (based on antennae) that it is not Ancyrona. I also found picture matches on Pie Dish Beetle - Pterohelaeus on ALA/Bowerbird http://www.bowerbird.org.au/observations/64390 Hence, I'll rename the species.
