Yellow Shouldered Dung Beetle
Size 10mm. This beetle was found farmland with free roaming horses. There were quite a few specimens well hidden inside horse manure that was rather fresh, probably one or two days old. The beetles are very fast and it doesn't take long for them to dig themselves into whatever substrate is available. It is a bit disappointing that ALA does not show a single photo of this species. For one: this can not be a rare species and more importantly: there is a well established research group, deeply embedded into the local, science political high society. (It is a taxonomic group that in recent history has been topped up with non-endemic species in order to tackle dung created by non-endemic species.) The animal is beautiful. Its abdomen/elytra looks similar to the texture of horse manure, has yellowish longitudinal lines. Its legs are long. The photographed specimen seems to have some yellow spots that might be dung or parasitic infestation. I was a bit surprised to find a dung beetle the first time I stirred around in horse manure, which was highly random and coincidental.
