Coconut Whitefly
Size 3mm. This is actually quite a large insect. When I found a spiralling structure in our garden last year, I contacted Queensland Biosecurity. They confirmed that it is Aleuroctarthrus destructor, an endemic species and not the invasive species, the spiralling whitefly. I was disappointed not to find any pictures of this species anywhere. Also, I was disappointed that a State agency is not passing on biodiversity data, but seems to keep it hidden away. Their agents, however, were very friendly and helpful. I told them that I don't have a collection permit and that they take all responsibility of illegal research according to the Queensland Biodiversity Act 2004. Today, 16/10/2016, I managed to find another spiralling nest and could locate a living specimen. I assume this is the first published record that shows the animal and its nest. Otherwise, please let me know. This photo like all the other ones are fully copyrighted and it is illegal to remove and use it outside this webpage.
