Spike-shouldered Shield Bug
What an amazing bug! It was a small animal, about 5mm, resting at the tip of a lemon leaf, distracting me from taking a photo of one of my target species. The animal was solitary and tried to avoid my camera flash. It is an excellent flyer. It took me hours to find the correct ID. But it is always a great feeling having succeeded to ID onto species level. I am confident that this is a Panetius species. This species was first documented 1866 by the Swedish scientist Stal. ALA has a picture thanks to a citizen science project (Tony D, Bowerbird). CSIRO also has an accurate document but fails to give a species name, but actually hides every ID for it beyond family level. Was it really necessary to go through thousands of pictures at http://www.bugguide.net and not being successful, almost giving up? Why is it up to amateurs to provide pictures while professionals hide them away on purpose?
