Antenna-kink Crambid Moth
Size about 18mm. Found sitting on our pineapple plant during the day. Finding an identification was an odyssee. The animal is so distinct with its upwards and forward pointing antennae, that are kinked and even forked forward, and slightly outward. Zooming in shows the lamellae, too. It sort of looks like a wish bone, used to triangulate smell. Amazing anatomy! The animal has a large white band across the middle of its body. The sides of the wings look like their seam ends in three large black half-circles. Legs are striped, have dark bands. There are a few similar species that show these characters almost identically (e.g. Nacoleia alincia). It certainly shares the white band with Spoladea recurvalis which I could eliminate as a candidate. I don't think there are many moths showing similar antennae (found it one other related species, namely Metasia shown at http://biocache.ala.org.au/occurrences/f193979d-b0ac-4bac-a53e-fa3d78f1ccef which actually led me to the correct ID). I first thought it was a deformation, originating in the omnipresent use of pesticides in suburban areas.
