Browntail Gum Moth
A very hairy moth, yellow-brown in colour. The front legs are stretched forward and like all the other legs that go sidewards are covered in fluffy hair. Marginal band at the end of the wings that shows a white dot at the top and whitish colouration along the band. Taxonomically, this is a problematic species. ALA has it as Euproctis baliolalis, and has Urocoma baliolalis as synonym. The proper literature reference can be found on http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lyma/baliol.html Amateurs and the rest of the world regard Euproctis as outdated and have replaced it with Urocoma baliolalis. The US iNaturalist initiative (as shown by GBIF) collects data on this Australian species under that name. Since Urocoma baliolalis is actually the basionym, I assume that ALA is right and the rest of the world is not, but does not care a lot. One lesson from this example where science could learn: taxonomic history needs to be transparent in authoritative national databases and some minimal effort to help correct published records containing outdated or wrong taxonomy, vice versa, would go a long way.
