Evening Brown
Size about 40mm. This butterfly is hardly visible when on the ground in leaf litter. I believe the upper side was reddish, but I didn't see it for long. I approached through long grass, but there were too many long halms obstructing the view. It is the grass this butterfly grows up in. I found a perfect picture match on http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/nymp/leda.html and therefore I assume that the identification is correct. The colouration and pattern seem to vary a bit. There are golden eyes on the irregular, tailed wings. Head has a pointy nose. Update 15/4/2017: Yesterday, I came across this species again. It showed the same behaviour, flying and resting, and relying on its camouflage in leaf litter. It still doesn't let me get close. Obviously, the animal is quite fast to react. I had the animal with closed wings in perfect focus, but the photo shows it with opened wings. It confirms the beautiful deep creamy red that I had seen the first time around.
