Splendid Ochre
Size 30mm. The animal was found resting on our grape vine plant at about 2 metres (had to rush inside to get a stool. Due to its size, shape but also past caterpillar findings on this plant, I had assumed it to be a Hawk Moth. It is a butterfly though. The colours and markings are just breathtaking. The underside of its wings have blueish white spots surrounded by a black border. There is also a large red area in between. Some more bright spots sort of go up in an arc. The upperside is bright orange with various smaller and bigger rectangles, arranged erratically but in groups. Body is covered in thick greenish hair with segments visible. Red antennae tips.
