Zigzag Leafminer
This is a very common animal and being quite large, about 10mm, it is highly visible. I am surprised how difficult it was to identify it. ALA has no sightings for Brisbane, and more importantly I can not find a record in Peter Chew's brillant http://www.brisbaneinsects.com The only species identified on ALA is C. azaleella from the Solomon Islands. Tom Murray's webpage shows various Caloptilia on http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/moths_july_2015 I named this specis Zigzag Leafminer for its pattern. It looks like a staircase, or a colourful airport airplane escalator. Please let me point out here, that photo-matching identifications for most species would not be possible without the most helpful ressource: http://www.bugguide.net At least for desperate species, it is so much more easy to navigate than any big, global database. It only comes with the downside, that taxonomy can often not easily be translated into GBIF/ALA and more importantly, most endemic Australian species are missing.
