Red-eyed Femur-banded Fly
Size 9mm. Found on our Lilly Pilly bush. Frankly, I don't even believe my own identification. It is definitely a fly. It has strong similarities to some Leptogaster species (see http://www.bowerbird.org.au/observations/8705). However, the mouth part and the claws suggest that this is not a Robber Fly at all. I am just short of alternatives (or more honestly more knowledge). I love the photo though. It shows a small fly with long legs (my first assumption was Long Legged Fly). The hind femur are enlarged and show a black band above the knee. Thorax looks blueish underneath, going into a humped dorsum that is dark, most possibly with wide longitudinal stripes. Abdomen is slender, starting with very narrow, transparent waist, going into black or dark brown segments and ending in a downwards pointing bend. Head seems only connected by a thin thread. Red eyes are large. Mouthpart is really small. The fly is covered in short bristles, especially on legs and abdomen. I only have three photos, because there was an even weirder and smaller unknown fly nearby.
