Red-eyed Teardrop Hoverfly
Size about 12mm. This species was found in the bush, in a little forest on a sunny day. I believe it was about to lay eggs. I regretted my decision to leave it alone right there. I should have put even more effort into taking a good photo, lean over more and get the eyes in focus, too, or the wings. My identification is tentative based on my match with http://biocache.ala.org.au/occurrences/eae62151-ed9c-483b-bf48-8fe647d850ef I don't know what the museum's identification is based on since it looks quite different to the described animals in this genus. The animal has a black banded tearshaped abdomen, huge red eyes. I could not see any markings on the wings. Long legs.
