Window-wingbase Bee Fly
Size about 11mm. This is probably quite a common fly species. It surprised me by flying right under me while I was crouched near a gum tree to investigate and photograph some wasps. This guy simply came, and seemed to lay eggs into the soil. It has a transparent part of its wings at the base. The wings are otherwise dark brown. The fly has a shiny thorax with whtie furry collar and sides. The abdomen seems to have some white streaks, too. I adapted the English name from http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_robbers/FenestrataBeefly.htm. Somehow, I don't like the name. It so reminds of beef, rather than a mix between a bee and a fly - which it truely looks like. If the Latin is so descriptive I wonder how the term short-winged came into play. Actually, on second thoughts, I am going to change that name.
