Narrow-tailed Cricket
Body size without legs or antennae about 12mm. This cricket was found in our basil/monarda dydima garden, home to all sorts of hoppers. Identifying this animal is a bit complicated. There are not many records. As far as I could see from picture representations there are at least two taxa this animal fits almost to 100%. Can we please have more taxonomists that care more about tidying up and revising taxa than gaining publicity by naming new (or probably even long known) animals after presidents and other politicians, including their fellow colleagues. This could also be Anaxipha exigua http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/152051409). I prefer to use the ALA taxon Amusurgus tinka for which Bowerbird provided a match http://www.bowerbird.org.au/observations/12147). Only three records of this species, all from Northern Queensland. A very confusing animal taxonomically, since it reminds of a grass hopper (shortish antennae), a katydid (slim build), but also a cricket. Update 22/1/2017: just found a third potential taxon this might fit into: Metioche vittaticollis. I think this taxon even has a record for Brisbane, but also a lot of representations that don't look anything like it.
