Mantis Lacewing
Size about 25mm. What a stunning beauty! I saw this insect near a quarry lake, with lots of Paperbark and Eucalyp trees. I missed the chance to photograph this animal when I first spotted it on a gum tree with heavily grooved bark. It flew away. It was a huge coincident to spot it a second time. It seemed tame this time. I thought it was a Praying Mantis and it is difficult to believe that it is not. On the other hand, the wings look like a typical Neuroptera. The animal was again on gum bark, this time a bit lower at about 1 meter. Occasionally, it did some shadow boxing, jabbing that looked like yoga movements. I think it does it to impress and deter predators. The wings also have a bordeaux red marking in the usual spot. Antennae are short, mouthpart looks triangular, like a praying mantis. Its claws seem to have a spike in the middle and are serrated, too. Body is segmented with yellow-orange base colour and large red-brown markings along its body. The eyes are to fall in love with, big and a beautiful blue.
