Big Pole Mantis
Size 120mm. This large mantis was spotted while trying to locate a spider. It was face-downward on a tree, hardly moving but closely observing me. I read somewhere that latistyla means wide-styled, but I prefer a translation that is closer to the Latin. I translate Stilus not with Style but with pole. The prefix lati- often refers to large, big, wide (latitudo -inis). Anyway, beautiful animal. It has ponted shoulders and two - probably characteristic - black dots a bit further down. Wings in the observed animal were about a third of its body. They have a distinct pattern. The abdomen was not fully covered by the wings. The abdomen segments are black dotted. The head looks not much different to other mantis, mid sized antennae, large eyes. It did not open the serrated front legs for me.
