Black-and-Yellow Striped Ichneumon Wasp
This wasp was also called Gotra sp. but I could not find this taxon confirmed anywhere. This group of animals is parasitic to the pupa of some moths. Update 28/2/2017: While this species occasionally visits our garden and is very shy and active, I found that they are easy to photograph elsewhere. A few individuals were resting and patrolling a tree trunk with some termite or ant infestation. That was in drier Eucalypt habitat in suburban Brisbane. These animals were much larger and didn't mind being photographed. Actually, I almost had to take the camera macro extension rings off in order to fit them in the frame. The body colouration and anatomy seems astonishingly similar if not identical. Update 9/12/2017: I added a photo of a species that does not quite match. It shares the blueish abdomen, but has red-black legs rather than orange ones. It was a tenacious hunter on some trees near a creek. It was quite methodically in its search pattern and used its antennae to explore cracks in the tree bark.
