Black-chested Ichneumonid Wasp
Size about 20mm. This species has been observed several times in woodland while searching for Bumble Sawflies. It carefully scanned the Red Ash Trees up and down, often coming near the sawfly larvae, but never resting for long and always on the move. The animal looks reddish, has long legs, a long bent abdomen, short stinger. Head is completely black. My first photo shows the animal in flight, with legs hanging, but strangely enough vibrating from the shin downwards. I could not find a decent match on ALA. My reference is http://digiins.tari.gov.tw/tarie/Collection0131E.php?id=ichn15024005&searchKey=Minomo,%20Osaka although the wings look a bit darker on my specimen. I certainly did not want to group it with the quite distinct and extremely common Two-toned Caterpillar Parasite Wasp that roams lawn and is slightly bigger.
