Orange Tryphonin Wasp
Size 20mm body size. Likes to hide among and under leaves where it may be parasiting caterpillars. After finding and documenting one individual clinging to the underside of our tomato plant in our garden today, 7/9/2017, I split what I had called Orange Ophionin Wasp, and reclassify one of the two wasps that seems to be exactly what I found today. The other one, I am quite confident is a different species, probably an Ophionin (I found a representation in ALA that is totally misclassified under Ichneumon promissorius). Anyway, I am quite surprised about the quality and details the photo in amongst tomato leaves shaken by wind gusts. They show internal organs quite well. The jaws are also a beautiful detail. The body scales show an amazing texture and scale overlapping, even some transparent parts of the scale. The ocelli are massive on top of the otherwise narrow head, mainly consisting of ovale compostite eyes. I am confident that this is a Netelia species of some sort, maybe Netelia producta or Netelia apocrita (unsure why ALA writes both parts of the bionominal in capital letters).
