Stripe-eyed Long-tail Wasp
What a wasp! Body size is about 15mm. The ovipostor is at least 70mm (I checked and could not believe it myself). The wasp was definitely on the hunt on a fallen tree log. There were many other wasps foraging on and under the loose bark. I am confident that this animal is in the family Megalyridae. Only the genus Megalyra consistently shows ovipostors that long, and it is not a huge family in the first place. What is annoying though is the fact that my specimen is identical to the one CSIRO published. One part of me can understand and appreciate that they contribute to picture representations of rarer taxa. I just wish it would be possible for professionals to get identifications that go a bit deeper than when I browse the internet.
