Vase-cell Mud-Dauber Wasp
Size about 30mm. Very large wasp. It visited our Basil plant that was in the sun. Actually, there was another large wasp around and I had thought they were the same species. This one has a straight, narrow, thin and almost endless waist. It is black which is unusual for this species. So, my identification could be wrong. It has eyes that remind more of Ichneumon wasps than Apoid or Vespoid Wasps. Abdomen is black except the front tip which is yellow. Yellow lines and markings are found on its thorax, too. It might be a common wasp in Brisbane.
