Wobbly Back Wasp
Size 4mm. This wasp was posing on our pineapple plant. It moved a bit but seemed ok with my presence. I assume that this species is quite common since I found another unidentified representation from Brisbane that seems to match. Identifying small wasps is always a challenge. The variety and similarity of a seemingly endless number of wasps is overwhelming. It could be a wasp in the family Torymidae, superfamily Chalcidoidea. The animal is black in general appearance with bright round red eyes poking to each side. The wings are transparent, finely hairy and have the dark stump vein near the back. Through the wings one can see the abdomen with an unusual almost cross-like yellow marking. It looks like the black abdomen has just exploded, torn in a cross, and some yellow tissue is showing. The thorax is very bumpy pustulose. Head is narrow. Antennae short with a few equally long segments ending club shaped.
