Wood Nesting Wasp
Size about 13mm. I was sitting in front of our wood stack trying to photograph a wasp I had seen in a different spot when this species turned up. When I moved it flew away, returned later, flew away again. From these quick landings I thought I'd pre-focus with my camera. The wasp gave me a huge fright when, suddenly it was almost filling the frame in full focus. I got two photos before it vanished in the hole. From experience I know that it will be hard to identify this one without a paper reference guide. I have searched ALA for similar wasps before. Maybe I am looking in the wrong spot. The wasp is black, in the typical vespoid form, slender waist, slender wings, big jaws. The abdomen clearly shows some golden stripes.
