Fence Jumping Spider
This is a very small and flat jumping spider. I found it on the wooden fence next to our house when I didn't think much of it. I made up its name and will most probably change it at some stage. It only serves to distinguish this species from other different ones that I have found. It might be a well-known species. Maybe it is Holoplatys. Update: I just found a very large specimen that - for now - I put into this gallery. It was found within a metre of the small specimen, but this one is huge, maybe 18mm. It is very shy and hides in between fence cracks. Those might be different animals. Both animals display their front legs like scorpion pincers. Update 19/8/2016: after this spider has disappeared for a week, it displayed nicely and stayed out to be photographed at will. Plenty of photos and now, I am confident that this species is Holoplatys complanata. I also confirm its huge size. It has lots of eyes and some photos show bumps that might be signs of exposure to some parasite. I am glad this spider was left alone by the resident gecko nearby. I might rename this species into Scorpion-mimicking Jumping Spider, since it is not only the physical front legs that give it that appearance but also its gait.
