Four-spined Jewel Spider
Size 13mm. This spider was found in a mixed habitat, at about 2 metres above ground, towards evening. The spider rested in the middle of a large, economically built web above a bush. Its was upside down, hard to reach with the camera. I actually thought that is was an Australian Jewel Spider and was a bit surprised to identify it as Gasteracantha quadrispinosa. It is an exceptionally beautiful animal, with a black body and a yellow carapace with four black-red protrusions. On the yellow there is a marking that looks like a pirate sign. The species shows records further North and South from Brisbane. I assume it is quite common.
