Australian Butterfly Ray
This large ray was lying on the seafloor, hiding under a layer of sand. I first thought it was an airplane wing or a surfboard, until I saw the checkered tail. Size must have been about 150cm at least. There are several Gymnura species, some of them with little data. The shape rather resembles Gymnura bimaculata, the body being much wider than long. The animal indeed has striking resemblance to some moth (as documented elsewhere).
