Rakali
Spotted this species a few times but it is not easy to sneak in a photo without being very patient or lucky. This is a protected Australian species. Obviously, the name Common Water Rat has been replaced by the indigenous term Rakali. In the local aboriginal language Yugambeh the word for Water Rat is 'kuril' (based on http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/225674/Indigenous-Languages-SEQ-Placenames.pdf accessed 15/7/2016 - this information is missing in Wikipedia). The Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane's Southbank tourist precinct is a fantastic testimony of Brisbane culture: no pedestrian or cyclist would ever design a bridge like this, it looks good but is an unbelievable statement of disregard of functionality (and accountability). Take 'skuril' as a mnemonic to remember the indigenous name of the animal that might still be found near the bridge.
