Xenacoelomorph Worms
An interesting taxonomic group that is worth reading up on. Research in this area is extensive and different molecular studies read like novels. Xenacoelomorpha Worms are monophyletic and have attained their own phylum while previously they were thought to be flatworms. Their position in the taxonomic tree is still disputed, but it seems clear that it is at a very basal clade level. As such, it is a perfect study object. This specimen is only slightly larger than 1mm. The video shows how it is hunting and feeding on planktonic organisms as well as crawling. While I called the photographed specimen White Acoelomorpha Worm, this identification could be wrong. Actually, watching the video again, I am tempted to refute my identification. It doesn't seem to be primitive at all. The animal has sensory organs, uses its parapodia as gastric funnel. It could be Gastrotricha, Gnathostomulida, or even Platyhelminthes. It was found in muddy silt from a local tidal flat, formerly mangrove habitat. It was photographed through a container with extreme magnification. As usual, any hints appreciated. If anyone can identify the tiny gastropod in the clip, that would be sensational.
